Long recognized as a family-friendly destination, Crown Center in Kansas City boasts two major new attractions sure to appeal to kids of all ages. Sea Life opened April 6, and the Legoland Discovery Center will open April 29, so start planning a road trip to Kansas City to take in what's new and fun on the western end of I-70.

Getting up Close With Sea Life
The brand-new Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium transports visitors to an underwater world. You'll journey from the fresh waters of the Missouri River into the mighty Mississippi River and on to the warm blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, finally ending in the deep, dark Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, you'll have close-up views of everything from tiny seahorses to scary sharks. The highlight is a walk-through underwater tunnel in a huge tropical ocean tank where you can come nose-to-nose with a shark. You'll feel totally immersed without getting wet.

The Sea Life center features more than 5,000 sea creatures in 30 display tanks in 12 different habitat zones. The aquarium holds more than 260,000 gallons of water. Kids will love the hands-on touch pool where they can hold a crab or touch a starfish.

Some of the many sea creatures are blacktip sharks, zebra sharks, jellyfish, cow-nosed rays, common octopus and clown fish (made popular in Disney's "Finding Nemo").

SL_seahorse_sm4"Sea Life Kansas City will offer kids of all ages an immersive, interactive and educational experience," said Mendy Rose, marketing manager for both Sea Life and Legoland in Kansas City. "Sea Life is all about having fun and learning at the same time, and we're proud to be another wonderful reason for folks to visit Kansas City."

Lots of Lego Bricks
If your kids enjoy playing with Lego bricks, they'll love the new Legoland Discovery Center Kansas City, which is described as stepping into the biggest box of Lego bricks in the world. Legoland, scheduled to open April 29, includes hands-on play areas, a 4D cinema, Lego-themed rides, and special party rooms for birthdays and other celebrations. Families with children between the ages of 3 and 10 will especially enjoy this interactive and educational experience.

An indoor attraction, Legoland Discovery Center will highlight Kansas City's notable skyline and landmarks, which will be recreated in Lego bricks and displayed in Miniland. Miniland also features Lego creations from The Wizard of Oz, with iconic scenes from the movie, including Dorothy's Farm, Emerald City and the Wicked Witch's Castle.

"The Wizard of Oz has long been associated with Kansas and the surrounding area. This gives visitors to Kansas City a chance to experience one of their favorite movies in a new way at Legoland Discovery Center," Rose said.

The Magic of Merlin
Lego_demoball2Merlin Entertainments is the parent company for both Sea Life and Legoland. The Kansas City sites mark the fifth Sea Life center in the country and the seventh Legoland Discovery Center in the world. Each attraction recommends allowing two to three hours or more, for a visit.

Both attractions occupy what used to be the first two floors of Halls department store at Crown Center. Sea Life is at 2450 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo., 64108. Legoland is at 2475 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Mo., 64108.

More Crown Center Attractions
There's more new at Crown Center than the Sea Life and Legoland attractions. Chip's Candy Factory is scheduled to open April 15 on the first floor of the Crown Center Shops.

Chip's Candy Factory replaces The Candy Store, which closed March 25. It will combine the world of candy and sweets into a modern candy store experience: bright colors, new candy fixtures, custom bistro tables, novelty machines, and more.

The candy factory is a sister store to Chip's Chocolate Factory, which has been a Crown Center mainstay for nearly 30 years, and was recently featured on Food Network's "Kid in a Candy Store."

The new shop is near the Crown Center Showplace, which is home to children's exhibits such as the current Animal Tales & Trails, which runs through April 29. The free exhibit lets children jump with a "kangaroo," climb in an "eagle's nest," sit with a "black bear" and her cubs in a cave, or use "alligator" backs as stepping stones to cross a river.

Big Bend Railroad Club Hopes to Expand Membership

From the dawn of the locomotive era, trains have had a captivating effect on the young and old alike. In St. Louis, that multi-generational fascination expresses itself on the first Tuesday of every month at the public sessions of the Big Bend Railroad Club.

These free events are held at the club's headquarters in the historic passenger depot of the Frisco Railway at 8833 Big Bend Road in Webster Groves. Visitors have a chance to see the club members at work, operating a number of model trains along an expansive track system that spreads across multiple rooms amid a detailed backdrop of hills, depots, trees, tunnels and bridges. Three train operators manage the action from a perch above the track, with support from a dispatcher. Although infrequent, derailments do occur on occasion–to the consternation of the club members and the delight of younger members of the viewing audience.

Visitors to the public sessionswhich run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.–are often packed in shoulder-to-shoulder, jockeying for position to view favorite engines. "It's easy to spot our regular visitors," said Ken Rimmel, the club's secretary. "They bring step stools so they can see more action."

The monthly audience is composed of a diverse mix of young children, teens and adults. "Sometimes we have more kids than adults at our public sessions," Rimmel said. "We hope that some of them will grow up to be future members."

Indeed, one of the primary reasons the Big Bend Railroad Club opens its door to the public is to inspire future generations of model railroad enthusiasts and to build support for their club.

BBRR_lg"Membership is a major challenge," said Paul Thomas, the club's president. "Creating and sustaining interest in model railroading is vital to the future of our club." As Thomas notes, model railroading is a hobby that uses a broad range of skills and talents, and membership in the club allows individuals to gain knowledge in design, electricity, mechanics, carpentry and many other areas while at the same time building new friendships.

Currently the club has about 25 members, though some are more active than others. Many of the club's members have been involved with the organization for decades, but several others have joined in the last few years. The youngest current member is 14.

But even the younger members have a strong appreciation for the club's rich history. Today the Big Bend Railroad Club is recognized as one of the longest running model railroad organizations in the region. It was formed in 1938, just three years after the National Model Railroad Association was launched. Throughout its 74-year history, the local club has been headquartered in the same building it calls home today. For decades, the club occupied only a small part of the building, which at the time still served as a functioning depot for the Frisco Railway. Disembarking passengers would often crowd around the model tracks and watch the club members as they tinkered with engines and train couplings.

But as passenger rail travel plummeted, the railroad stopped using the building as a depot. When the building was eventually scheduled for demolition in 1994, the Big Bend Railroad Club stepped in and bought it. The purchase enabled them to not only save their headquarters, but to double the size of their model railroad.

The move was fortuitous for the club, but it also came at a time of declining interest and awareness of model railroading. "The existence of the Big Bend Railroad Club appears to be one of the best kept secrets in the community," Thomas said. "We continue to find people living within walking distance of the old Frisco Depot who were not aware of the extensive model railroad that has been within for over 70 years."
