The SkyScreamer, Six Flags' take on the traditional carnival swing ride, opens to the general public on Saturday, May 14.
But an early preview was open to a few lucky journalists, families and kids, including 5-year-old Tommy O'Leary of Kirkwood.

Tommy and his dad, Dan O'Leary, saw the 236-foot SkyScreamer on the morning news, and they both knew they had to check it out, Dan said. Dan, who reminisced about the countless hours he spent in the park when he was a kid was excited to introduce his son to the park. Although he was unsure how Tommy would do on the ride.

Fastened securely in his seat -- the ride features a seatbelt in addition to a metal lap bar and strap that goes between riders' legs -- Tommy was relatively stoic as he waited for the ride's lift off. As the ride gained speed, Tommy was all smiles.

Skyscream_olearyThe two-and-a-half minute ride tops out at 43 mph and traces a 98-foot circle. While many riders were hooting and hollering, this ride wasn't much of a scream-inducer. Smooth and quiet, the new ride provides views of the entire park and surrounding hills. Although Six Flags has given this ride a "max" thrill rating, unless riders have a serious fear of heights or a mistrust of modern engineering, it's more pleasant than it is terrifying.

What did Tommy think about the ride? As riders were slowly dropped back to the ground, Tommy quietly asked his dad, "Can we ride this again?"

Meanwhile, behind Tommy and his dad, rollercoaster-junkie Ernestine Hoffer, of St. Peters, took her two daughters, Abigail, 10, and Ruthanne, 12, on the SkyScreamer. Amped up on adrenaline, Abigail reported, "This was awesome. It's the best ride ever." Ruthanne, who kept her eyes closed the entire ride, wasn't so sure about the entire experience.

Brothers Benjamin and Matthew Burnside spent the morning on the SkyScreamer. The two rode on the swings seven times. Benjamin, 15, said, "This is probably my new favorite ride; it's one of the best. It's almost like the original swings, only it gets really high and it feels great with the wind blowing on you."

skyscream_soarChildren must be 48 inches tall to ride the SkyScreamer (children 44 inches and taller may ride with a responsible person 54 inches or taller).

Six Flags St. Louis is celebrating its 40th anniversary this season. The Screaming Eagle, the park's original wooden rollercoaster, is getting a fresh coat of paint and will officially reopen on or around June 4, 2011, to coincide with the anniversary of the grand opening on the park, June 5, 1971.

Six Flags St. Louis is located at 4900 Six Flags Road, Eureka, Mo., 63025. Call 636-938-5300 for more information.

How to Play at Laumeier Sculpture Park

Nestled in a quiet 105-acre spot in Sunset Hills, internationally known Laumeier Sculpture Park
features more than 70 pieces of art set among lush green fields, rambling trails, creeks, trees and wildlife.

While the outdoor sculptures are visually stimulating, children naturally will want to interact with the arts. Climbing on most pieces is off limits, but here are some approaches that can heighten your child's excitement during a visit.

  • Have your kids pick up a site map from the museum's galleries building located at the North entrance to the park. The map features small images of all the sculptures and can be used to create your own "treasure hunt" or matching game for younger kids.

  • Lau_Tasset-EyeThe park's sculptures and natural setting feature an abundance of opportunities for shape recognition and texture and counting exploration. There is also a beautiful harmony between the sculptures and nature throughout the park. See if your children can discover similarities or differences between the environment and the sculpture or even have them recreate a sculpture using natural objects such as sticks, grass and leaves.

  • If your child is interested in creating art, bring paper and supplies to draw or paint images that reference the sculptures. For photography fans, encourage your kids to run free with a camera. They will probably find some views of the sculptures you may not have seen yourself.

  • Are your children in love with pretend play? Charles Ginnever's steel Crete looms like a sinister spaceship; Jackie Ferrara's Laumeier Project is an impromptu playhouse; Robert Lobe's biting yet whimsical piece The Palm at the End of the Parking Lot just may transform into a magical tree; and Beverly Pepper's grassy and step-filled Cromlech Glen seems to embody another planet.

When planning your visit with younger children, focus on just one area of the sprawling park at a time. The Eastern Woodland and the Children's Sculpture Garden have a good concentration of sculptures close together. Strollers can easily glide along on paved walkways that go around most of the park, but if you want to get close to sculptures you might want to bring a baby sling. Also, note that the Eastern Woodland paths are all gravel. Consider packing a picnic, your dog, a kite, and some good walking shoes for a delightful and inspiring day out.

Laumeier Sculpture Park has some worthwhile upcoming events (search by location in the Sprout calendar for Laumeier Sculpture Park), including the Art Fair, the Red Thread Project: Dance of Hats, the summer Music and Movies series, free docent-led tours and the numerous summer art education classes for kids and adults.

Laumeier Sculpture Park is located at12580 Rott Road, St. Louis, Mo., 63127. Call 314-615-5278 for details. The park is free and open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to a half-hour past sunset.
