Wabash, Frisco and Pacific Railroad Celebrates 50 Years in Glencoe

SEPT. 2, 2011 -- Fifty years ago, on Sept. 4, 1961, members of the Wabash, Frisco and Pacific Association drove their first spike into the ground in Glencoe, beginning construction on what is now one of St. Louis' most beloved railroads.
Today, the railroad's 12-inch gauge steam engines pull trains loaded with children, and children at heart, through the forest. The tracks criss-cross the Al Foster Trail, skirting the Meramec River. Currently, a round-trip journey on the Wabash, Frisco and Pacific trains is about 2.5 miles, and the association is building an additional 3,500 feet of track.
To commemorate the association's 50-year history in Glencoe, special postcard tickets will be issued on Sunday, Sept. 4, for $5, and include a ride on the train.
Wabash, Frisco and Pacific Railroad is open from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. every Sunday from May through October. The railroad is located at 199 Grand Ave., Glencoe, Mo., 63025. The association asks for a $4 donation from train passengers ages 4 and up.
