The Magic House Debuts Do-It-Yourself Playground

Imagination-PlaygroundAUG. 2, 2010 -- The Magic House has unveiled a brand new playground. The children's museum now offers visitors the opportunity to create their own play environments with an Imagination Playground, a collection of interchangeable foam blocks, mats, pipes and ramps that kids can transform into a unique play universe. The Imagination Playground will be available daily in the museum’s front-yard Play Garden, weather permitting.

Far from the standard recreation equipment like jungle gyms and monkey bars that only develop gross motor skills, the Imagination Playground exercises muscles and minds by encouraging creativity, experimentation and cooperation, too. All interaction with the more than 75 loose parts will be facilitated by The Magic House’s staff, who will ensure that everyone is constructing and creating safely.

The Imagination Playground is a concept conceived and designed by architect David Rockwell to encourage child-directed, unstructured free play. With its focus on moveable components, the Imagination Playground provides a changing array of elements that allow children to constantly reconfigure their environment and to design their own course of play. Rockwell partnered with KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization that builds playgrounds, to create the portable version of the “Imagination Playground” that The Magic House offers.
