Let's Get Digital!
Twice as many girls as last year will participate in Microsoft's 2011 DigiGirlz High Tech Camp this August. The camp, hosted by the Saint Louis Science Center, has been booked since May, and organizers are thrilled with the program, which is now available to 55 girls.
"Most importantly, DigiGirlz works to dispel stereotypes of the high-tech industry," said Frieda Smith, the science center's senior director of public programs, evaluation and gallery experience. "The camp gives young women the opportunity to learn, firsthand, what it's like to develop and work with cutting-edge technology. By meeting with professionals in the field and other young women that share the same interests, they learn that a career in technology is not out of their reach."
The two-day camp is free for girls entering grades 9 through 11 who are interested in science, math, technology and engineering. Girls learn about job opportunities, meet potential mentors and talk with high-level professional women already working in the field. Attendees experience a variety of Microsoft technology-related tools and games.
Fifty-five girls are enrolled in the 2011 program, and 70 more are on the waiting list.
Not on the roster this year? The Saint Louis Science Center will host a DigiGirlz High Tech Camp again in 2012, and DigiGirlz offers online classes.
Rockstar Nutritionist to Perform at Fontbonne University
Rockstar nutritionist Jill Jayne will perform her obesity-fighting music at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at Fontbonne University.
Jump with Jill is a rock and roll concert about nutrition that travels to schools across the nation. Jayne is combating childhood obesity through original music and movement-based learning. The performance employs the same tools normally used to sell junk food to teach kids about healthy habits.
"According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 31 percent of children in Missouri are considered obese," said Cheryl Houston, director of Fontbonne University's dietetics program. "As dietitians, we strive to find fun and effective ways to help kids learn healthy eating habits early on, so they can live long and productive lives. Jill does exactly this in an unforgettable way."
The free performance is open to the public and is one of the concluding activities at Camp FRESH, a summer day camp at Fontbonne University that takes kids on an interactive, hands-on journey toward better health. The performance takes place in Medaille Meadow at Fontbonne University, 6800 Wydown Blvd, St. Louis, Mo., 63105. Attendees should RSVP to Kim Ross, 314-889-1415 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
St. Luke's Hospital Offers Online Maternity Class
Last month St. Luke's Hospital began offering a new, web-based childbirth class. The class was designed for moms-to-be who are on bed rest, and parents with time constraints and scheduling conflicts. The course also functions as a refresher for parents who have already experienced childbirth.
Covering pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and newborn care, the class uses interactive content such as videos, animated illustrations, audio options and activities to enhance learning. Once registered, participants receive an access code, valid for 90 days. Mom-to-be and her family members can proceed through the course on their own schedules. The $60 course is open to any expectant parents regardless of where they choose to deliver.
