Teen Fantasy Sensation Tamora Pierce Will Speak at St. Louis County Library

OCT. 18, 2011 -- Tamora Pierce, no. 1 New York Times bestselling young adult author, will discuss the latest installment in her popular Beka Cooper series, "Mastiff." The event will be on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Pudd'nHead Books.
Tamora Pierce is highly regarded as one of today's most influential and prolific young adult fantasy writers. Beginning in the early 1980s, she led the way in "girl power" fantasy with her first novel, "Alanna: The First Adventure." Since then, she has contributed a fresh perspective to the genre, making an indelible mark with strong, female protagonists in each of her novels.
In "Terrier," the first Beka Cooper book, Pierce introduced readers to a young heroine born and raised in the bowels of the Lower City, who had battled Tortall criminals hundreds of years before Pierce's most popular heroine, Alanna, first drew her sword. Beka soon proves herself as a fierce opponent for the Lower City's crook becomes a full-fledged member of the law-enforcing Provost's Guard, commonly known as "the Provost's Dogs.
The highly anticipated third installment, "Mastiff," opens in a state of civil unrest. A high-ranking noble has been kidnapped, and the issue of slavery in Tortall threatens to create an uprising. With bribery and fraud tainting every corner of the city, Beka is grateful for the company of her partner, Tunstall. The addition of a mage named Farmer grates on Beka's nerves, especially since his talents appear few and far between, but she doesn't have much time to dwell on his inadequacies when the enemy seems to have a pulse on their every move.
