Strollers Recalled Amid Concerns about Entrapment
Oct. 20, 2010 -- About 2 million Graco strollers are being recalled today due to the risk of entrapment and strangulation, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission news release. Four infant strangulation deaths have been reported, and CPSC is aware of five reports of infants become entrapped. The strollers included in the recall are the Graco Quattro Tour and MetroLite strollers and travel systems distributed between 2000 and 2007.

This recall comes on the heels of two jogging stroller recalls earlier this month. Valco Baby recalled 12,000 strollers due to strangulation hazards (details). Tike Tech also recalled about 800 strollers due to strangulation hazards (details).
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that serious injury or death can occur in strollers if children are not properly restrained. An infant’s body can pass through the opening between the handrest bar or stroller tray and seat bottom, but his/her head and neck can become entrapped. This poses a serious risk of entrapment or strangulation, especially to children younger
than 12 months of age.CPSC advises caregivers to:
1. Always use the safety harness each time your child is in a stroller. A harness can prevent a child from slipping between the seat and the handrest bar or tray. This can save a baby’s life.
2. Be aware that infants as young as a few weeks old can move about when asleep. Babies, particularly those younger than 12 months old, can become trapped and strangle in a stroller.
3. Never leave a child unattended in a stroller. This is especially important if the stroller seat’s backrest is in the reclined/flat position.
