St. Louis Earns Spot in Top 10 Allergy Capitals

SEPT. 30, 2011 -- Fall is full of fun and beauty, but for allergy suffers, it's also miserable. Not surprisingly, this year St. Louis again ranked as one of the top 10 "Fall Allergy Capitals" by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. St. Louis was the ninth most challenging place to live with fall allergies.
Allergy Capital lists, which are also available for spring allergies, are based on high pollen counts, use of allergy medications and the number of allergists available to treat those affected. Knoxville, Tenn., was the worst city for seasonal allergies this fall.
For those that suffer from seaonal allergies, the best way to cope is to stay indoors, according the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. It's a tough task for parents with busy kids.
Joy Krieger, registered nurse and executive director of the St. Louis chapter of the organization recommends allergy-proofing your home. "If anything, the house can be a reprieve from being out in the atmosphere," Krieger said.
AAFA offers a guide to reducing allergens in your home. The guide offers specific tips for reducing allergens in kids' bedrooms and tips on cleaning and storing toys and stuffed animals.
Most importantly, Krieger said, "Do not open your windows and let the pollen and different particles come into the house." The same holds true for your vehicle, she said.
When your family returns from an outdoor activity, Krieger recommends allergy-sufferers immediately bathe to remove pollen from their bodies. And, of course, consult your doctor for appropriate allergy medications.
