The white-winged Paper Kite butterfly is one of the most delightful creatures at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, and typically there are only 200 of these species in the Butterfly House at one time. In December, there will be more than a 1,000. Visitors can watch these fascinating animals as they gently float like snowflakes through the lush greenery of the indoor tropical conservatory. The event is included with Butterfly House admission.

The lush, 85-degree indoor conservatory will dazzle with dozens of white orchids, contrasting with the reds and greens of tropical foliage, trees and other flowers. Visitors can enjoy the hundreds of Paper Kite butterflies in free-flight around them as they stroll through the display. Look for a rare display of Paper Kite chrysalides, which feature striking bright yellow or gold backgrounds with contrasting black markings.

Children can join in the fun by creating butterfly- and winter-themed crafts on Saturday, Dec. 3, 10 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Lopata Learning Lab. Kids can create a shiny, glittery gift for someone special or to keep.

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is located at 15193 Olive Blvd. in Faust Park, Chesterfield, Mo., 63017. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-12. Children 2 and under are free. The Butterfly House is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, and is closed on Christmas day.
