SEPT. 16, 2011 -- "Roving Mars," a film that takes viewers on a journey to Mars with NASA scientists and engineers, opens today at the Saint Louis Science Center OMNIMAX theater.

Through the eyes of "Spirit" and "Opportunity," two of NASA's state-of-the-art exploration rovers, viewers will see what it's like to stand on the surface of the planet that's intrigued mankind for eons.

"Originally planned to explore Mars for only 90 days, the rovers lasted nearly eight years on the Red Planet," said David Ritchey, associate director of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. "Roving Mars gives viewers a chance to experience the mission that changed the way we explore our universe."

The film features the rovers from development and assembly to discoveries on the surface of Mars. In its search for habitats, the rovers have found signs of wet environments in the past that may have been favorable for microbial life.

"Roving Mars is a surprisingly touching film," said Jackie Mollet, senior director of theater, retail and exhibitions at the science center. "The audience shares in the hope and joy right along with scientists as they watch the rovers land and then begin working on Mars."

"Spirit" ended communications in March of 2010, but "Opportunity" is still making discoveries. NASA will launch the next generation of rovers, "Curiosity," in late 2011 with a scheduled landing on Mars in August 2012.
