Quick Review: Mr. Popper's Penguins

JUNE 17, 2011 -- If you like silly animal movies, Jim Carrey and penguin poop humor, you're in for a treat with "Mr. Popper's Penguins," opening in theaters today.
"Mr. Popper's Penguins" is the story of Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey), a businessman whose life changes when he inherits six penguins. As he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional life starts to unravel.
"I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan, but this movie was pretty good for the kiddos and funny for their parents," said Jennifer Lin, a Sprout writer who attended an advanced screening of the film. "I liked how even though it wasn't nonstop silly action or extreme facial expressions, the kids were still engaged."
The only pitfall to the movie, Lin said, was a tired and stereotypical plotline involving separated parents. However, several moments are heart-warming as audiences watch as Mr. Popper learns to love.
"Mr. Popper's Penguins" is directed by Mark Waters, and also stars Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury. The movie is rated PG.
