President of National Academy of Sciences Visits St. Louis, Meets with Youth

FEB. 3, 2011 -- Despite the inclement weather predictions that dominated the news Monday, Jan. 31, more than 100 people attended an intimate presentation by Dr. Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences and world-renowned atmospheric scientist, at the Saint Louis Science Center. His talk, titled Climate Change: Science and Questions, was heard not only by the lucky few in the audience, but by participants at 24 science and technology museums around the world via satellite broadcast and by countless others via a live broadcast on HEC-TV and a webcast.
"This was an important moment for the Science Center," said Philip Needleman, Ph.D., Interim President and CEO for the Science Center. "We are honored that a scientist of Dr. Cicerone's reputation and caliber found value not only in presenting to our invited guests, but in learning more about our educational programs by visiting with participants in our Youth Exploring Science program."
Dr. Cicerone met with a group of teens from the Science Center's Youth Exploring Science (YES) program to discuss the importance of education for a career in science. YES is one of the Science Center's premiere educational programs, which sends 14-year-olds on a four-year journey during which they explore scientific concepts through inquiry-based experiences and learn to teach others.
As the President of the National Academy of Sciences, Cicerone helps shape science and environmental policy at the national and international levels. The NAS was established by an Act of Congress in 1863 to "investigate, examine, experiment and report upon any subject of science or art" when called upon by the government and remains an important resource for the President's administration today. His presentation coincided with the special exhibition, Climate Change, currently open at the Science Center.
