New Trail Along Dardenne Creek Connects Parks, Neighborhoods

dardennegreenwayGreat Rivers Greenway, in partnership with the City of St. Peters, has officially opened a new 3-mile segment of the Dardenne Greenway in St. Peters.

The new multi-use paved trail extends from Woodlands Sports Park to Mexico Road, where an underpass connects trail users to an existing trail along Dardenne Creek leading to Dardenne Park. Additional trails provide access to Rabbit Run Park and surrounding neighborhoods, including the Ohmes Farm subdivision adjacent to Woodlands Sports Park. Special features of the trail include a 180-foot pedestrian and bicycling bridge spanning Dardenne Creek, as well as a nature observation overlook. Extensive landscaping including native trees and wildflower restoration areas can be found along the entire three-mile trail.

This trail segment is part of the 26-mile long-range plan for the Dardenne Greenway, which will parallel Dardenne Creek from the Busch Conservation Area to the developing Lakeside 370 Park, where ultimately the Dardenne Greenway will meet the Boschert and Centennial Greenways. Previously opened Great Rivers Greenway projects in the Dardenne Greenway include a one-mile trail in the City of Cottleville and three miles of trail at the BaratHaven development in the City of Dardenne Prairie. Eventually, the Dardenne Greenway will connect St. Peters to Cottleville, O’Fallon and Dardenne Prairie to the west, and to the St. Charles area on the east.

Great Rivers Greenway is the public organization developing an interconnected system of trails and greenways, connecting residents to parks and other community amenities to make the region a better place to live.

St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano is pleased that the new trail provides an opportunity for many residents to appreciate nature near their homes. “Our community already takes advantage of the trail system along Spencer Creek and the short trail north of Mexico Road along the Dardenne. We’re excited about another option for exercise and meeting neighbors,” said Mayor Pagano.

“Great Rivers Greenway is very excited to provide such an important investment in the high quality of life for the City of St. Peters and neighboring communities along the Dardenne Greenway,” said Susan Trautman, Executive Director. “Residents and visitors alike will enjoy this convenient and beautiful pathway for exploring nature and experiencing the outdoors along Dardenne Creek. With help from our municipal partners, we are looking forward to extending the greenway in the upcoming years.”
