JAN. 18, 2011 -- Hundreds of figure skaters from around the nation will compete at the Ice Skating Institute's Winter Classic Feb. 11-13 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. The event will include a record performance that involves 140-plus people from our community on the ice all at once.

Admission to this event is free and open to the public.

Dubbed by the ISI as the nation's biggest and best recreational ice skating competition of the season, the ISI Winter Classic will take place at all three Rec-Plex rinks, the North rink at the original Rec-Plex building and Rinks A and B at Rec-Plex South.

The ISI hosts several national events throughout the year, and the Rec-Plex has become a regular host venue. The Rec-Plex hosted the ISI Synchronized Skating Championship in 2008 and will again host the ISI Synchronized Skating Championship in 2012.

"The Rec-Plex is a true source of pride for our community," said St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano. "Our three NHL-size ice rinks allow us to host some amazing events, and draw visitors to boost our local economy. I hope you come out to see these talented skaters for free at the Winter Classic."

Skaters at the ISI Winter Classic can win medals and points, and the rink that has the most points during the event wins the team championship.

The Rec-Plex skating school expects to break an ISI record for the largest "Production Team" at the Winter Classic. Ice skating students, coaches and even parents will skate together during a four-and-a-half-minute program at Rec-Plex South Rink A on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 4:27 p.m. Phil Boettge, Rec-Plex Recreation Leader for the ice program, says that a total of 142 skaters signed up for the Production Team program, which would smash the previous ISI record of 97 skaters.

Rec-Plex South Rink B - 5:30-10:15 p.m.
Rec-Plex North Rink - 6:45-9:55 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011:

Rec-Plex South Rink A - 8 a.m.-7:45 p.m.
Rec-Plex South Rink B - 8 a.m.-7:05 p.m.
Rec-Plex North Rink - 8 a.m.-6:40 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011:

Rec-Plex South Rink A - 7:30 a.m.-5:05 p.m.
Rec-Plex South Rink B - 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Rec-Plex North Rink - 8:45 a.m.-2:40 p.m.
