King Penguin, Banteng Calf and Gazelle Born at Zoo

JAN. 18, 2012 -- If you're lucky, a visit to Penguin & Puffin Coast at the Saint Louis Zoo might land you a glimpse of one of the zoo's newest babies, a king penguin.
The chick hatched on Jan. 8, 2012, weighing just seven ounces, according to a zoo press release. The chick is being cared for by its parents Francine and Kaiju, who will take turns keeping the baby penguin warm and safe (and largerly hidden from view!) under their belly flaps for the next few weeks.
Today the zoo also announced the births of a bull banteng calf named Studebaker, a female Speke's gazelle named Iris, and several insects. Studebaker, born on Jan. 9, is an endangered species and will make his public debut with his herd at Red Rocks when warmer weather returns. Iris, born Jan. 6, can be seen with her family, including mother Lily and father Chip, in the Antelope House on cold days and outside in Red Rocks when temperatures allow.
