MAY 24, 2011 -- Kids can now bake their own baguettes in the kitchens of area St. Louis Bread Co.

The program, which started last month, invites groups of 10 or more children ages 5-12 to book a BIT Kids class, said Kelli Nicholson. Already, numerous scout groups have taken advantage of the program, which costs $5 per child. The classes are offered at 14 of the company's area bakery-cafes.

"The classes are ongoing throughout the year, but it is perfect for a summertime activity while school is out," Nicholson said.

During a typical class, each young baker receives a baking hat, apron and coloring pages. They have the opportunity to score a mini french baguette and watch it as it bakes in the oven. Bakers in Training also tour the bakery-cafe and learn about the first sourdough loaf baked at St. Louis Bread Co. Children get to take their bread home along with recipe cards for french bread margarita pizza or cinnamon raisin french toast. Classes can be customized based on the needs of the group, Nicholson said.

The class is an extension of the company's committment to its customers, Nicholson said.

"We're so passionate about our bread and our fresh ingredients and who we are," Nicholson said. "We try to engage our customers as much as we can."
