Is Your Family Up to the St. Louis Adventure Challenge?

AUG. 26, 2011 -- Imagine your family racing between parks on bicycles to collect clues and master physical and mental challenges. If this sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday, St. Louis area parks and recreation departments have a thrill for you: the 2011 St. Louis Adventure Challenge, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1.
"It's set up very similarly to the Amazing Race," said Corey Newgent, sports specialist at The Lodge Des Peres. "There are five checkpoints in each leg of the family adventure, and there are a lot of different activities."
The starting point is at Simpson Park in Valley Park, Newgent said, and that's where families will find a packet with clues to figure out their next destination. Beyond that, event organizers are tight-lipped about the specifics of the challenges during the race. They don't want to give away details to contestants who are vying for bragging rights as winners of the race and a bounty of donated prizes.
There are no age requirements to participate, but youth under age 18 must compete on a family team. Newgent recommends kids be comfortable riding their bikes on roads with vehicle traffic.
Registration costs $100 for a family of four and includes shirts, medals and a post-race meal. Just racing with an older group? Adult co-ed teams can also participate in the race, and an extended route is available for the most adventuresome teams.
More information about the 2011 Adventure Challenge is available at The Lodge Des Peres website. The registration deadline is Sunday, Sept. 11.
