Help Joplin Students with Back-to-School Supplies

JULY 26, 2011 -- After a traumatic spring, Joplin Schools wants every student to return to school with the supplies they need for a successful year. School officials are requesting donations to help with the purchase school supplies.
On May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado caused extensive damage in Joplin, displacing about 3,000 students and killing seven students and one educator. Many students lost homes and possessions and are still dealing with emotional stress and physical trauma, according to school district communications. The tornado damaged or destroyed 10 facilities and caused roughly $151 million in damage to Joplin Schools' facilities. When the 2011-2012 school year begins on Aug. 17, many students will attend school in temporary facilities.
To ease the transition back to school, the district has launched an "Adopt-an-Eagle" program to ensure each child has school supplies. It costs $40 to outfit a student's backpack with the necessary supplies. About 2,000 students still need to be adopted before Aug. 17, said Kim Vann, director of community development for Joplin Schools.
Those who wish to participate in the Adopt-an-Eagle program, can send checks made out to Bright Futures Joplin to North Middle School, 102 North Gray Street, Joplin, Mo., 64801. Designate "Adopt-an-Eagle" in the memo line.
