Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 6-8
In the state's annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, Missouri retailers are waiving the state sales tax (4.225 percent) on back-to-school items purchased Aug. 6-8.
Items that are exempt from state sales tax include:
- Clothing (any article having a taxable value of $100 or less)
- School supplies (not to exceed $50 per purchase)
- Computer software (taxable value of $350 or less)
- Personal computers (not to exceed $3,500)
- Computer peripheral devices (not to exceed $3,500)
Cities, counties and other districts that levy sales tax can choose whether to participate in the sales tax holiday. St. Louis City, and St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln, Franklin and Jefferson counties have all elected to waive their county sales taxes during the holiday. Most municipalities and many other tax districts will continue to charge city and district sales tax. The Department of Revenue has posted the names of the cities and districts that have opted out of the sales tax holiday and will continue to charge city or district sales tax throughout the weeked.
The Missouri Department of Revenue has additional information on the 2010 sales tax holiday, including detailed descriptions of items exempt from sales tax.
