MARCH 15, 2011 -- St. Louis County Library and St. Louis Public Library celebrate the 2011 Read St. Louis Young Readers' selection with a special event featuring beloved young adult author Lois Lowry. Lowry will discuss and sign her groundbreaking novel "The Giver" on Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at St. Louis Public Library—Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., St. Louis.

The program is free and open to the public. Pudd'nHead Books will provide copies of Lowry's books for purchase and signing at the program.

Lois Lowry's novel about a futuristic utopian society received the Newbery Medal and has influenced generations of young readers. In "The Giver," 12-year old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memories, does he begin to understand the terrible truth about the society in which he lives. Adventurous and masterfully written, "The Giver" tackles complex issues such as the meaning of history, diversity, empowerment and freedom.

One of our country's finest living writers for children and young adults, Lois Lowry is a two-time winner of the prestigious Newbery Medal. She is also the author of "Number the Stars," "Gathering Blue," "The Messenger," and the Anastasia and Gooney Bird series.

"The Giver" is the Young Readers' selection for Read St. Louis 2011 presented by St. Louis County Library and St. Louis Public Library. At the core of the Read St. Louis program is a belief that making reading fun, exciting and occasionally educational, will stimulate a passion for lifelong learning in all of us. Each year, Read St. Louis showcases books selected by the St. Louis County Library and St. Louis Public Library from several distinct categories.

Read St. Louis 2011 Titles:

  • Distinguished Literary Achievement – "A Widow's Story" by Joyce Carol Oates
  • Mystery – "When the Thrill is Gone" by Walter Mosley

  • Non-Fiction – "The Good Soldiers" by David Finkel
