A Return to the Classics: 'Winnie the Pooh' Opens Today

JULY 15, 2011 -- Steeped in the classic roots of the original Winnie the Pooh books and films, "Winnie the Pooh" opens in theaters today.
"Winnie the Pooh" is the first big-screen Pooh adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios in more than 35 years. The all-new movie reunites audiences with Pooh, and his friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore. The friends embark on an adventure to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit and to find Eeyore a new tail.
"With this new movie, my children saw the Winnie the Pooh I knew as a child," said Sprout writer Laura Hewgley. As always, friendship saves the day, Hewgley said, "which is exactly the theme that stuck with me as a child."
The classic storyline is updated with a few modern twists, she said. A favorite being the interaction between the characters and the pages of the Pooh storybooks. Eeyore and Piglet both have letter-crashing mishaps, Hewgley said.
The movie is just 68 minutes, including a short about the Lochness Monster, "The Ballad of Nessie," and is a perfect first movie for 2-3 year olds, Hewgley said. However, the older children in the theater seemed to enjoy the movie just as much as the toddlers.
"Winnie the Pooh" is rated G.
