“We are thrilled to send 'Shrek The Musical' to theatres across the country,” said Bill Damaschke, President of DreamWorks Theatricals, “and for American families to experience their favorite ogre and fairy tale creatures live on stage.”

An entirely new musical, "Shrek The Musical" is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek!, as well as the DreamWorks Animation film "Shrek," the first chapter of the Shrek movie series.

"Shrek The Musical" tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess and learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairy tales.

The role of everyone’s favorite swamp-dwelling ogre, Shrek, will be played by Eric Petersen, who joins the tour from the Broadway production. He recently appeared as the socially challenged Barfee in the national tour of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Haven Burton, also from the Broadway Company will play the feisty Princess Fiona. Haven previously played Margo the Dog Whisperer on Broadway in "Legally Blonde" and understudied Elle Woods. Alan Mingo, Jr. is Shrek’s lovably annoying best friend Donkey. He was an original company member of "The Little Mermaid" where he played the role of Sebastian, and prior to that played the role of Tom Collins in "RentE" on Broadway. David F. M. Vaughn plays the vertically challenged villain Lord Farquaad. He too joins the tour from the Broadway Company. He has also appeared in "Les Misérables" and "Saturday Night Fever."

Rounding out the cast of misfit fairy tale characters, the peoples of Duloc and Far, Far Away are: Joe Abraham, Kevin Boseman, Holly Ann Butler, Carrie Compere (see our Q&A with Compere - INSERT LINK), Emily Cramer, Tyrone Davis, Jr., Sandra DeNise, Scarlett Diaz, David Foley, Aymee Garcia, Brian Gonzales, Justin Greer, Lisa Ho, Benjamin Howes, Madison Mullahey, Mara Newbery, Denny Paschall, Sarah Peak, Keven Quillon, Morgan Rose and Blakely Slaybaugh.

"Shrek The Musical" features a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole), music by Olivier Award-winner Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline, or Change), and is directed by Tony Award nominee Jason Moore (Avenue Q) and Tony and Emmy Award-winner Rob Ashford (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Promises Promises). "Shrek The Musical" has set and costume designs by Tony Award winner Tim Hatley (Private Lives, Spamalot), lighting design by Olivier Award winner Hugh Vanstone (A Steady Rain), sound design by Peter Hylenski (Rock of Ages); choreography by Josh Prince, music supervision by Tim Weil, music direction by Andy Grobengieser, and orchestrations by Danny Troob and John Clancy.

"Shrek The Musical" will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Grand Center for two weeks only, Sept. 11-26. Performances are Tuesday-Saturday evenings, 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 19, 7:30 p.m. There is also a weekday matinee on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 1p.m. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, online at metrotix.com, MetroTix charge by phone 314-534-1111 and MetroTix outlets. Ticket prices start at $26 and are subject to change; please refer to www.fabulousfox.com for current pricing. Group orders of 15 or more may be placed now by calling 314-535-2900.

Go Green at Hazelwood's 2010 Harvestfest

HF_crafts_sm“Going Green!” is the theme of this year’s Hazelwood Harvestfest, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. After a morning parade, a full day of fun activities for all ages is planned at Howdershell Park, 6800 Howdershell Road. Admission is free.

“We selected ‘Going Green!’ this year as our Harvestfest theme because we wanted to encourage our residents to join together in doing their part to save our planet,” said Mayor Matthew Robinson of Hazelwood. “All of us make choices everyday that can either hurt or help the environment – in the cars we drive, the products we buy, as well as the way we use and dispose of them. If all of us do our part to reduce, reuse and recycle, we can make a difference in helping to improve the quality of life for future generations.”

Some of the ways Harvestfest organizers are promoting the “Going Green!” theme include having all the staff wear recycled T-shirts for the event. They will also be giving away recycled bracelets to the first 300 kids who enter the park, and teaching youngsters how to make craft items using recyclable items from the St. Louis Teachers’ Van. In addition, recyclable utensils, dinnerware and cups will be used by all the food vendors. Separated disposal containers labeled food, recyclable and compost will be placed throughout the park for everyone to use.

HF_parade_smThis year’s festival will begin with the traditional Harvestfest Parade, scheduled to begin at Hazelwood City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, at 9 a.m. The best viewing areas for the parade can be found along Town and Country, Holiday, Imperial and Village Square drives.

Music will be performed by the John Ford Highland Pipe Band and the Hazelwood West High School Marching Wildcats. After the parade ends, the John Ford Highland Pipe Band will roam around Howdershell Park giving mini-concerts for the festival attendees.

A new addition to this year’s 22nd annual Harvestfest will be the participation of Rev. George “The Shoeman” Hutchings who is known for turning people’s donated shoes into clean drinking water. Hutchings will be in the parade and have a booth alongside other information/game booths at the park event.

The Shoeman picks up used and new shoes year round from businesses, churches, schools and shoe drives. Once collected, he gives them a second life by selling them to exporters. The money generated from these sales transactions is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water purification systems and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those in need. Having collected over 700,000 pairs of shoes in the last two years, the non-profit Shoeman Water Projects, a non-profit 501(3)(c) organization, has sent four water drilling rigs to Kenya. Hutchings is also making preparations to send a water filtration system to the people of Haiti. Even before the devastating earthquake, at least 40 percent of Haiti’s population didn’t have access to clean water.

The Children’s Activity Area will feature an inflatable Chaos Obstacle Course and a Giant Dual Slide for youngsters to climb on between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. In the Arts and Crafts Area, kids can play in the Bounce House or make picture frames using recyclable items from the St. Louis Teachers’ Van. For the early birds, a Petting Zoo will be available for the children’s entertainment between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. Magician Eldon Roark will take the stage at 11:30 a.m. after the Miss Hazelwood Coronation and dazzle the audience with his amazing illusions. Free pony rides will be offered to kids, starting at 1 p.m.
