Weekends Are Prime Time for 'Star Trek: The Exhibition'

Visitors continue to explore the world of Star Trek at the Saint Louis Science Center, and the science center has extended the exhibition hours on Saturday evenings until 7 p.m. every week. The extra hours are more than just a chance for a 23rd century date night; they're also an opportunity to take advantage of the special reduced evening rate for the exhibition. After 5 p.m., adult tickets to the exhibition are just $12, instead of the usual $14 and children ages 5 to 12 are just $10. As an added incentive, parking is free after 5 p.m. as well, making that journey to the future more affordable than ever.

Maybe you'd prefer your Saturday night to be movie night. Starting Saturday, Feb. 18, the Science Center will show the IMAX version of the 2009 blockbuster film, "Star Trek," in the OMNIMAX Theater at 4 p.m. The PG-13 film reintroduces the Star Trek story and casts new actors in the familiar roles of Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy and the rest. If you missed it on the big screen the first time around or have never seen it in full IMAX format, now's your chance. Tickets are $9 each for an adult admission, with discounts for science center members available.

Late hours and PG-13 movies might sound like fun for grown-ups, but Sunday afternoons are all about launching "the next generation" of science fiction fans at the science center. Kids 12 and under are free with adult admission to "Star Trek: The Exhbition" on Sunday afternoons. While parents can enjoy reminiscing about watching the various Star Trek television shows and movies, perhaps with their parents, kids can enjoy the special kids area inside the exhibition set up by the Science Center's Discovery Room staff.

The Sheldon presents Coco Soul and Friends "Mardi Gras Celebration," Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. "Let the good times roll" with this soulful Mardi Gras celebration, led by one of St. Louis' favorite vocalists, Coco Soul! With music inspired by New Orleans, Brazil's Carnival and more, Coco and Friends will create a musical party!

An accomplished vocalist and high energy front woman, Coco Soul has been a prominent presence in the Midwest music scene for most of her life. She's had a successful run as a singer, songwriter and studio artist in Atlanta. She returned to St. Louis and claimed the Riverfront Times best R&B singer honors in 2005, and in 2010, she won the St. Louis portion of the "Budweiser Battle for the Crown" competition. She currently fronts the super-group Soul Alliance and is a cast member of "The American Musical" and "Nothin' But the Blues," two of the Sheldon Concert Hall's morning educational programs.

Coco Soul has shared the stage with Musiq, India Arie, Dianne Reeves, Al Jarreau, Biz Markie and Morris Day & the Time among others. She is a respected local actress, working closely with The Black Rep and Stages St. Louis, and is well known as a co-founder of St. Louis' Café Soul, a monthly open mic, artist feature and hipster who's who gathering. Her latest talent showcase, the B-Sides debuted in April of 2010 at Lola.

Tickets for Coco Soul and Friends "Mardi Gras Celebration," are on sale now. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit www.TheSheldon.org.

The "Mardi Gras Celebration" is part of the Sheldon's Saturday family matinee series. Upcoming family matinees include St. Louis Irish Arts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10. Start your St. Patrick's Day festivities with the talented young performers of St. Louis Irish Arts, led by Helen Gannon. Don't miss this celebration of the songs, sounds and energetic step-dancing of the Emerald Isle! At 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, Cornet Chop Suey will wow the audience with their exciting style of traditional jazz, swing and blues music. With Brian Casserly, Tom Tucker, Jerry Epperson and Brett Stamps on the front line, and Paul Reid, Al Sherman and John Gillick making up the rhythm section, Cornet Chop Suey promises a high-energy good time! Learn more about matinee concerts at the Sheldon's website.
