Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent spreading your illness.
Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Then, clean your hands.
Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand cleanser.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
Get a flu shot.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone, 6 months and older, should receive the flu vaccine. Persons 3 years and older need a single flu shot each year. Children 6 months to 8 years old should get two shots at least 1 month apart if they are getting the flu vaccine for the first time. (Be sure to ask your child's doctor for more specific information.)
All shots are preservative free and can be given to patients age 3 and older.
Quadrivalent Vaccine Protects against four influenza strains (2 A strains & 2 B strains).
Fluzone High-Dose is an influenza vaccine, manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur Inc., designed specifically for people 65 years and older.
Check with your insurance regarding your flu shot coverage. Many plans cover the flu shot without a fee.
