Quite simply, the City Museum is St. Louis' playground, and most of the awe-inspiring attraction is located indoors. At many of the other attractions on this list, you could easily keep an eye on your kids while sipping your coffee; that's not true at the City Museum. Don your knee pads because you'll want to get in on the fun, crawling under the floor, climbing through a whale and up into a treehouse, sliding down three stories, careening down skateless skateboard ramps and exploring enchanted caves. General admission is $12.
City Museum is located at 701 N. 15th St., St. Louis, Mo., 63103. Call 314-231-2489.
St. Louis Outlet Mall
Blast off on the rocket-ship-themed playground at St. Louis Outlet Mall. Unlike the typical soft play areas found in most malls, St. Louis Outlet Mall seems to have lifted a playground right out of a neighborhood park and dropped it indoors. You'll find slides and climbers here, and the playground is located right next to the trackless train loading area. Still need to burn off energy? Rent some blades and ice skate at Icezone.
St. Louis Outlet Mall is located at 5555 St. Louis Mills Blvd., Hazelwood, Mo., 63042. Call 314-227-5900.
The Magic House
At St. Louis' children's museum, kids can climb a three-story "beanstalk;" slide, dig and build at Little Bit of Magic; and fish, shop and take care of babies in the Children's Village. This museum is all about fun, but there is a good chance kids will learn something while they're busy playing. The bulk of the indoor playground type of activities are located in Little Bit of Magic, designed for kids 6 and under. Admission is $10.
The Magic House is located at 516 S. Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood, Mo., 63122. Call 314-822-8900.
The Sports Academy
Most people know the Sports Academy for its soccer and football activities, but they also have a great playhouse for kids. Kids can explore two stories of bridges and ramps and a slide. Admission to the Playhouse is $3.
The Sports Academy is located at 101 The Game Drive, Glen Carbon, Ill., 62034. Call 618-288-6899.
Playtime Party Center
Sure, with a tube slide and climbing area for young children and a tot play area, Playtime Party Center has the basics of indoor playgrounds covered. But they also have bounce houses, an arcade and a skating rink, so lace up the quad skates and wear your kids out. Visit the center's website for seasonal skate session schedules and the latest prices for skating. Admission is $2 per person.
Playtime Party Center is located at 1225 Wentzville Parkway, Wentzville, Mo., 63385. Call 636-887-4244.
